Beautifully Disposed Trash

The sight of ugly trash bins in scenic parks certainly mars the natural beauty. Bryant Park Litter Receptacles and Recycling Bins put an end to the eyesores and appear as inspirational pieces that urge us to be responsible citizens. The bins come in three variations, one for general trash, one for papers and one for cans and bottles. The linear detailing, colors and operational slits match the function of each bin.

Details

  • Plain detailing on the petal castings with a fern green color coating is used for the trash units.
  • Linear detailing that relates to the shape of the opening for newspapers and magazines, with a lime green color coating is used for paper recycling units.
  • Organic detailing that relates to the shape of the opening for bottles and cans, with a blue color coating is used for the plastic and metals recycling units.
  • The outer basket or petals are powder-coated aluminum castings supported together by powder coated inner-ring ductile-iron castings.
  • The flip-up hinges and lid are made from fabricated and spun stainless steel plate.
  • The inner liner that contains the standard plastic trash bags comes in two versions, expanded steel mesh or rotationally molded polyethylene.
  • The units are heavy duty but are lightweight, easy to use and move around.
  • The molds for the branded petals have loose parts that allow for the customization of the branded petals and can include other park names or logos.

Ignacio Ciocchini for the Bryant Park Corporation in New York designed this line of litter receptacles but the units are commercial products that are for sale to be used in other urban areas or parks. Other parks in New York, like Herald Square Park, Greeley Square Park and sections of Broadway Boulevard, are already using it and several parks in the United States are currently considering its use.

Fast and Furious in 2025

The Aerius concept is a high performance electric vehicle for 2025. The concept is combines the performance of race cars with emerging sustainable energy sources and materials. It’s driven by Michelin Active in-wheel electric motors at the rear and on-board electric motors in the front for instantaneous acceleration and agile handling. The aerodynamic body to reduces energy consumption and solar panels re-charge the carbon nanotube super-capacitors to extend its range while emitting zero carbons. Time travel will cost extra.

The form of the vehicle is heavily influenced by formula 1 race cars. The strong wheel arches hints at the four-wheel drive of the vehicle giving it a strongly planted road stance. The elegant clean glasshouse that runs the length of the vehicle represents the clean purity of the vehicle meaning zero emissions and the diffuser side blade links the whole aesthetic back to race cars.

For The Single Person Family

Meet MET, a two-person vehicle for the single person family of the future. The need for massive cars is dwindling so MET was designed to address the social constructs of future families to meet the needs and possibilities of an electric future. Instead of massive and heavy battery backs, the rear wheel is the battery. It can be swapped for a charged one from public stations or home charging units.

BMW Activate the Future Documentary Series

Screen-shot-2011-02-18-at-1.53.46-PM.jpg

A few weeks ago BMW launched Activate the Future, a series of documentary interviews that explore what our future could be. It borders a bit on the overly optimistic, but of course, I love that. "Wherever You Want To Go" is the first release in the series, in four parts. They include some of the most influential scientists, academics, pioneers, and entrepreneurs of our time, this four-part documentary paints a unique picture of technology, culture, cities, our past, present and how it all relates to the future of mobility. including astronaut Buzz Aldrin, Chris Anderson of Wired Mag, Robin Chase, founder of Zip Car, Marissa Mayer of Google, Syd Mead (I don't need to explain who that is), George Whitesides of Virgin Galatic, Mike Musto of Ridelust, and many more. I love that they got Mike in there because he plays the skeptical and hilarious yet wants it to be real Han Solo role in the group. Just to balance it out.

Check it out here:
Part 4: How we will learn to stop worrying and love the future. (forthcoming)

Thanks to designer, core77 moderator, and BMW owner Richard Kuchinsky for the link.

There is a healthy discussion going on about it in the forums as wellHERE.

Stuff that You Stick on Your iPhone Steadily Getting Bigger

If you designed the perfect little rectangle, would you bristle if companies started designing little form-interrupting gewgaws to slap onto it? I guess that's the price you pay for ubiquity. And you can't deny that some of these widgets add good functionality, like the Glif.

And while it looks a bit absurd, PhotoJojo's latest $35 iPhone add-on is a telephoto lens. It gives you 8x zoom, features a manual focus on the lens body, and comes with a stabilizing tripod.

Prior to the telephoto lens, PhotoJojo kicked off the camera-add-on thing with their FishEye, Macro and Wide Angle cameraphone lenses:

More recently, Square made the credit-card slider add-on, turning you into a self-contained retail operation:

The GoBiz i-Microphone runs $25 and will reportedly boost recordings by 12 decibels. Plugs right into the headphone jack and uses RF shielding to block interference and feedback:

The Future is Shiny: Design Glut Jewelry Line Launch

1013-c.jpg

The lovely ladies of Design Glut have finally launched their much-anticipated jewelry line, The Future is Shiny. Employing the whimsical and fun design aesthetic that they're known for, the first round of accessories are a collection of necklaces highlighting the beauty of a range of everyday objects -- payphone booth, 3D glasses, scissors and my personal favorite, a reversible open/close sign. The two designers raised money for prototyping through Kickstarter, offering everything from an "awkward thank-you" card, a webinar about running a creative business for supporters, to a custom necklace designed for donors. Check out their pitch video and more images of the necklaces after the jump...another success story for designers on Kickstarter!

The necklaces are available through the Design Glut Design Store.

Smash it up! A series of porcelain vases that met a gruesome end

GreatChinaVase_01.jpg

GreatChinaVase_02.jpg

For some reason Montreal artist Laurent Craste's porcelain series "Abuse" reminds us of Patrick Bateman:

Yes it is! In '87, Huey released this, Fore, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip to be Square", a song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity, and the importance of trends, it's also a personal statement about the band itself.

Does anyone know who the artist is? Thanks Mark!
