The Domino Clock, introduced by Seattle-based Carbon Design Group, is a set of three larger-than-life dominoes equipped with articulating "dots" that flip back-and-forth between black and white to keep time. They hang on the wall or stand free, serving as a sculptural piece and a semi-abstract time keeper. This clock is the outcome of what is termed a "Passion Project" at Carbon Design - internal projects taken on to fuel the creative teams without typical client constraints.

While the aesthetic of the piece was defined in advance, the team solved a number of complex engineering challenges, including developing a custom actuator to flip the dots from black to white in a pleasing, silent fashion and embedding low-cost wireless technology that maintains a clean design.

Check their blog for an interview with Eric Davis, one of the mechanical engineers behind the project who gives a detailed overview of the dot flipping mechanism.
