Get More Out Of Your Toothpaste Tube

Here is another intriguing Toothpaste Packaging design that makes total sense. SavePaste has a three-point agenda: To eliminate the hard-to-squeeze dead space, minimizing toothpaste residue left inside the container; Reduce two packaging to one. It means we can reduce waste and manufacturing price plus encourage recycling. And finally, have a user-friendly design so that people easily adopt it. I think it’s a full score on all three fronts!

ACADIA 2011 Digital Design Winners

HYPERLAXITY3.jpg

ACADIA (Association for Computer Aided Design in Architecture) announced the winners of this year's Design and Fabrication competition. Hosted in conjunction with Brooklyn-based fabricators FLATCUT_, the challenge seeked out innovative geometric forms that push the limits of design through the exploration of integrative material strategies for digitally fabricated assemblies. Awarded across three categories, Furniture, Lighting and Partitions, this year's winning projects displayed an interesting array of innovation including unique joinery solutions, expandable design options and the use of complimentary materials.

FURNITURE

RECIP is a modular furniture system comprised of mutually reinforcing sets of interlocking rubber panels laminated to heavyweight felt batting. The project draws on the inherent material properties of both rubber and felt to produce a structural system that is capable of both moments of rigidity and moments of flexibility in the same assembly. Thanks to its inherent adaptability, RECIP can be reconfigured to function as a chair, a table, a bookcase, a spatial divider, and any number of other applications.

The project relies on digitally enabled means of fabrication in order to minimize waste and maximize structural integrity. Machining patterns of v-grooves and cuts in the rubber produces a surface that easily folds into the peaks and valleys of the teeth that comprise the locking mechanism for the assembly. At the end of the lifecycle the project can be fully recycled. Designed by Alison MacLachlan, Bryan Gartner and Richard Cotter, all students of the University of Calgary's Faculty of Environmental Design.

LIGHTING

LUMINESCENT LIMACON is inspired partly from the Dutch Ruff, or flamboyant linen collars considered fashionable in 17th century Europe, as a vehicle for the manipulation of light. Defined by the polar equation-based Limacon curve, the roulette curve rolls at various speeds to generate precisely choreographed profiles that are combined vertically to construct a number of formations. Variables can be calibrated to accomodate and produce a host of different lighting conditions and affects depending on environmental factors.

To achieve both the lighting affects and the geometric configuration, the light is composed of 3form Ecoresin. When folded and nested, the ecoresin ruffles are laced together with an associative woven lattice of aircraft suspension cable, which, when combined produce a combination of tensile and compressive forces for rigid structural stability. Design by Andrew Saunders, an Assistant Professor of Architecture at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York.

PARTITION

HYPERLAXITY is a system of hexagonal parabolic ligaments composed of aluminum and silicone. The system is secured in compression by the tensioned silicone ligaments which connect all of the rigid aluminum members. Each part is necessary in order to maintain a cohesive assembly. Rather than resolve connections with hardware, HYPERLAXITY is driven by each materials' intrinsic qualities. Integrated connections are achieved through a number of custom elements. Locating tabs in the aluminum compression members are secured through holes in each pair of triangular aluminum plates. Connections between one plate and another are achieved using v-shaped clips which also employ a locating tab detail to create a pinned relationship. Slits in the silicone sheet allow the material to stretch over and wrap the locating tabs of the aluminum profiles. Held in place by this hexagonal silicone network, an aluminum ring its center span keeps the sheets in tension. Designed by Elizabeth Boone and PROJECTiONE.

An Award Worthy of an Award: Greg Durrell designs the Terry Fox Award

rsz_1-terryfoxaward-front_905_905.jpg

While we recently unveiled the Core77 Design Awards Trophy in anticipation of our live jury announcements, I came across another award design by Greg Durrell. He's designed everything from poster campaigns to workers' uniforms for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, not to mention this beautiful award for Canadian athletes (in conjunction withJames Lee and Ben Hulse). Clearly reminiscent of that year's medals in form, the Terry Fox award is given to athletes whom possess "determination and humility in the face of adversity." Durrell best describes the materials behind the award himself:

The award was made out of a combination of Western Yew wood and nickle. The Yew tree was specially chosen because a chemical found in its bark is currently undergoing research for cancer fighting properties. The choice to use a combination of natural and artificial materials was a reference to how Terry ran on an artificial leg. The undulating form of the design is inspired by Canada's landscapes and shares a similar style to the medals, trays and podium.

Two of these awards were given to athletes, while a third was given to Terry Fox's family. Although the award itself seems rather cumbersome to grasp, I am amazed at how well the two materials blend and hold together, creating this rustic but organic design.

If You Could Bend the Hands of Time

0ddontime01.jpg

You could argue there's nothing sillier than setting the clock forward to game yourself into punctuality, but people do it all the time. The "On Time" clock by Italy's Diamantini & Domeniconi addresses this by throwing a kink in the minute hand.

Ironically, Diamantini & Domeniconi don't seem to have a very good sense of time themselves, or they're defunct; their website hasn't been updated since 2009.

OPTI Driverless Taxi For London in 2025 by Paul Piliste

The rising cost of fuel has become a big matter of concern these days. Adding up to this is the increasing amount of pollution in the city, all of which contributes to depleting the quality of air. Perhaps, 55 percent of UK emissions results from cars and taxis, while the remaining from coal burning as well as lorry exhaust. To deal with such situations, OPTI driverless taxi intends to create another mode of transport that not onlyreduces emissions but transports people within city environments. This project has been proposed for people commuting to London. The concept is pretty simple. This vehicle, acting as a taxi or bus, would have hire points at central bus as well as train stations. Lithium ion batteries located within the chassis floor is the main source of power for the vehicle. The shape of the vehicle is small as to accommodate for short voyages. The seating position has been designed to be upright instead of laid back to design a smaller vehicle.

Another interesting feature of this vehicle is that, it is equipped with satellite navigation, proximity lasers, parking sensors as well as cameras, which make the OPTI, available 24 hours a day. The payment method appears to be via credit or debit card, generally verified using 3G. This purges robbery of the vehicle. Perhaps, the 3G is used to check the vehicles location for safety purpose. Even though OPTI driverless taxi is intended for 2025, I’m sure it’s going to take longer to make this public transportation becomes reality.

The Aid Personal Health Management Device Works As A Walking Cane

The Aid personal health management device provides the possibility for users who love to be an active member in their community but have difficulty in leaving their homes due to the health issues. This cane-like unit has been designed to become useful ICT device in user’s daily lives where it features services that are integrated with social infrastructure.

The Aid is actually focused to help elderly people and traumatized people who usually don’t have the confidence to step outside their house. They are isolated from the outside world and usually depressed because of the lack of social interaction with other people. This device works as a walking cane, a ‘helping hand’ to this people. It provides security and guidance from being lost or receiving the attention/help they need immediately. The integrated navigator works as a service and health device that provides information about blood pressure temperature and pulse rate. The SOS button when pressed will contact the help center and send the user’s current health status and location to provide immediate help from qualified individual.

The Aid personal health management device will help people with limited lifestyle to become more independent, confident, and sociable.
