Video On Demand

We’re introducing a few new elements to our awards program, not the least of which is adding a show-and-tell-style “video testimonial” to the entry component. Although it’s optional, we strongly encourage entrants to take advantage of this opportunity to give the jury a direct and personal perspective on your work, and to basically tell them what’s really awesome about your design.

For inspiration and edification, we asked four designers to give us their take on the video testimonial.

Dror Benshetrit of Studio Dror narrates his way through a screencast tour of his latest innovation, the QuaDror construction system.

Becky Stern, Associate Editor of Make: Online and CRAFT, explains the components and construction of her amazing TV-B-Gone jacket, a wearable television remote control.

Writer/designer/developer Craig Mod discusses his moment-capturing protocol, Hitotoki, in an interview conducted with a friend on the opposite coast.

Lavrans Løvlie, Director of the Norway-based firm braves the elements to share with us LiveWork’s service design for Oslo’s new public library.

Quick Tips for your video testimonial:

  • Keep the setting as straightforward and informal as you want it to be.
  • Make it personal. This is your story told your way. It should have a healthy dose of Point of View and be compelling to watch.
  • Hit the following points:
    1. What you were trying to do when you were designing your project.
    2. What’s great about it, what separates it from what’s already out there, and why it deserves the world’s attention.
  • Have fun while you’re doing it! This is supposed to be a delightful, informative and personal addition to the required entry materials.
Visit our Making a Video section for full details and start planning your 2-and-a-half minutes of fame!

Who Are the Jury In Your Neighborhood?

Meet our 15 Jury Captains who are heading up the judging of the Core77 Design Awards. Each of them brings a wealth of expertise and thought leadership to their judging category and we’re very honored that they have chosen to participate in our awards. Instead of bringing everyone to one location, we took a new approach to assembling the jury, distributing the field globally. No plane fuel, more legroom. Our Jury Captains are based in 13 cities spread around eight countries. Each will recruit four people from their area to form a locally-based multidisciplinary Jury Team. They get to do the judging in their own location, and we’ll provide the snacks. Once their results are finalized and validated, the teams will reconvene for a live web broadcast revealing their Winners, Runners-up and Notables, and the reasoning behind their choices. And they’ll do it all without jet lag.

We are pleased then to present our inaugural line-up of Jury Captains:

We've Arrived (and It's About Time)!

Welcome to the inaugural Core77 Design Awards! For the past 16 years we've been celebrating outstanding design and designers across a wide array of disciplines. Now we're proud to provide a global platform that honors the very brightest, boldest and most impactful work on an annual basis. We hope to set new standards for design awards by leveraging online scale, increasing transparency and decreasing plane fuel. We're opening the field to 15 categories, recognizing the emerging disciplines of Design for Social Impact, Design Education Initiatives, DIY and our intriguing "Never Saw the Light of Day." The submission process is online and allows designers the opportunity to show off their pitching skills by uploading a 2-minute-30-second video as part of their entry (it's optional but advisable).

Our jury system also gives the judging process a new twist. Rather than put each jury member on a plane and fly them to one location, we have selected a head judge for each of the categories (we call them "Jury Captains"). Based in different cities around the world, each captain will select four local experts (within train, bike or jogging distance) to join them in the evaluation process as a unified jury team. Not only that, these teams of jurors will reveal their winning choices via live web broadcasts. With jury teams in time zones as diverse as London, Tokyo, Sydney and Ahmenabad, we're looking forward to announcement parties at all hours of the day and night.

Meanwhile, the design team of Rich Brilliant Willing are hard at work making an award as innovative as the awards program itself. Thirty trophies will be awarded in total; one each of the Professional and Student winners of each category. Stay tuned to Core77 over the next two months as we document the evolution of this year's trophy!

So tell your friends, compile your materials and enter the work that you're proud of. We're ready and waiting!

Super Sexy Roll

Say hello to the Rollerphone concept! At first glance it’s merely a wrist band that projects time, much like the Alessi Concept we saw earlier, but then you realize it’s actually a phone with a retractable transparent screen at the base. How high-tech! It features perfect ergonomics and anthropometry in design thanks to customization – meaning the screen unfurls only to the tip of your fingers, so basically it give you a good fit between the ear and the mouth.

Besides the obvious features found in the latest cellphones, Rollerphone boasts of an enviable media centre. You can watch videos, chat online, play games, read books and listen to music. It’s going to be hard parting with a phone like this, who wouldn’t want their entire digital world on their wrist!

Salone Milan 2011 Preview: Case Study for Tron + Corian + Lago, by Shai Akram

Living Room Concept for Tron Designs Corian

Disney + Corian + Lago + Us + lots of pizza = A living room concept for Milan 2011

It's a long and (slightly) complicated story, full of unusual partnerships and unanticipated outcomes...Disney and Dupont have teamed up to exhibit in Milan this year. They decided to use two of their innovative products as the foundation the show—for Disney that was Tron: Legacy and Dupont wanted to take their well known material, Corian, into a new dimension.

corian1.jpg

The idea was to recreate the virtual world of Tron using Corian as the primary material and invite a selection of designers to propose furniture for each area of the 'safe house' (Kevin Flynns virtual home in the film). Invited designers and companies include Cappelini, Ernesto Meda andLago.

Background

Domestic furniture company Lago, is known for their interior 'systems' and unusual take on product communication, overseen inhouse by Diego Paccagnella. Paccagnella had the idea to create 'Apartmentos' to showcase the company's products in real-life situations—inviting people to live with the furniture and configure it to their individual needs as a convincing way to show the products in action. It was at the Apartmento in Zona Tortona two years ago that we first met Diego. My collaborator,Andrew Haythorntwaite and Jordi Canudas worked on a project (Buon Apettito) that needed some 'unauthorised' places to exhibit and Paccagnella (who knew Canudas previously) allowed the project to be shown at the Apartmento.

When Lago was approached to design the 'living room concept' for the Tron/Corian project, Paccagnella invited Canudas to particpate, and as the project was quite a large one—Jordi in turn extended the invitation to Haythorthwaite and I (the three of us had collaborated several times before). Which explains the 'us' in the equation—myself, Andrew Hathornthwaite and Jordi Canudas—three designers who enjoy working together and share an appreciation for the process of making as a kind of 'performance' of design.

The Project

The brief was to create a space that was easily recognizable as a living room, built from Corian with a strong visual connection to the film.

udine-mountains.jpg

As Jordi now lives in Spain and we are based in the UK, we decided to relocate to the manufacturers in Italy and work on the project together on site. We spent a very enjoyable week by the mountains—brainstorming, prototyping, eating amazing pizza and debating over late night grappa.

Proposal Overview

The virtual world described in Tron: Legacy has a strong and distinctive visual character. The environment is largely made up of geometric forms intersected by illuminated lines of coloured light, echoing its computer generated foundation and moving away from organic, irregular forms found in the 'real' world.

An often repeated shape throughout the film is the circle: it is present in objects, vehicles and graphics. This simple geometric shape is usually animated by another key motif: lines of light that cross over the costumes, transport and environment.

We focused on these two elements: circles and lines of colour, to create the foundation for the visual language of the pieces, building a living room scenario that can belong within the aesthetic world of Tron.

graphic.jpg

Materials

Thermo-moulding is one of the most immediate methods to create objects from Corian, the pressed sheets are formed, cut and joined to build volume and mass. This project takes a close look at the possibilities of moulding and develops a process of taking a single repeated shape, reconfigured via a range of interactions to create a landscape of functional objects where each expresses their own story of making. Much like the different digital characters within the film, each object has the same beginning, but very different outcomes.

graphic.jpg

Instead of camouflaging the joins within the furniture, intersections are highlighted by blue lines of glue that traverse the surface—easily explaining the concept and bringing the added dimension of the language of the interior world of Tron.

Living Room Elements

Each element that we commonly find in a living room scenario is analyzed and retranslated using a modular 'building block' of thermo-moulded Corian. As each product typology (book shelf, fireplace, coffee table and easy chair) has its own particular functional demand, every piece introduces a new method of cutting, joining and reconfiguring. The possibilities of building from a single formed piece are limitless!

totem-shelf--_-specs-2.jpg

white totem.jpg

Alongside looking at the unique production possibilities of the material, each piece is developed with a close look at the virtual world and how the real world living room might change in the realm of Tron. For example, we know that there is no real fuel to burn in the virtual world, so the fireplace becomes an interpretation of a focal point within the space, updated for this special new context.

The exhibition opens on the 11th April and runs until the 17th at Padiglione Visconti, Via Tortona 58, Milano, Italy.

Autism Connects Challenge: Only 10 Days Left!!

AutismConnectsOpens.jpg

Calling all students! There's only 10 days left to enter our Autism Connects student design challenge. Help create real-world solutions for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder and win $5000 in this international student competition! Have your work reviewed by our esteemed judges which include Yves Behar (fuseproject), Lisa Strausfeld (Pentagram), Richard Seymour (Seymourpowell) and our own Allan Chochinov (Core77) considering all entries. In addition, Autism Speaks will award creators (or one representative in the case of a team entry) of the top three designs a $1,000 stipend and registration fees to attend the 2011 International Meeting for Autism Research, to be held May 12 to 14, 2011 in San Diego, CA, where they will be invited to present their design concept.

See more details about the design/communication challenge after the jump and don't delay, enter TODAY!

BACKGROUND At some point in our lives, each of us will likely meet a person on the autism spectrum, or know someone who is touched by this complex condition. ASDs are prevalent worldwide, affecting nearly 1 percent of the population and 1 out of 70 boys. Although individuals on the autism spectrum vary enormously, in most instances difficulties in communication skills are one of the core challenges faced by those living with autism today. These difficulties can cover a wide spectrum, ranging from individuals with little to no speech, to those who may be fluid verbally yet have difficulty reading other people's intentions and emotions or understanding use of abstract language such as metaphors and analogies.

TASK DEFINITION
Designers are invited to produce new and innovative technology-based solutions to assist individuals with ASD in their communications with others and, in doing so, to increase the public's understanding of this unique and growing population. Design solutions should focus on improving communication on any of a number of levels: between individuals, within and between communities and their members, and among individuals without ASD so they can connect better with individuals who do.

Think creatively! Although designers may choose to explore web-based, tablet-based, mobile software or hardware solutions, technology-based solutions are not restricted to electrically-powered devices, and may include low-tech, innovative design solutions. Entries may be design concepts or fully realized solutions.
